What is genetic testing?

Genetic testing analyzes bodily fluids, like saliva or blood, to gain insights into your genes and health. Genes are short sections of DNA. They provide instructions our cells need to make molecules and other proteins. Our genetic makeup also influences how our bodies respond to food and medication.

Undergoing genetic testing at Paramount Health Directions provides a quick and noninvasive way to optimize psychiatric and medical treatments. Your provider uses the results of your genetic test to develop a personalized treatment plan that relieves uncomfortable symptoms and helps you feel your best.

Are there different types of genetic testing?

Paramount Health Directions offers several types of genetic testing, including:

Pathway Genomics: Nutritional Health Testing

Nutritional health testing evaluates the relationship between your eating habits and your genetic profile. Your provider uses this information to make personalized exercise and diet recommendations that support your metabolism and needs. You can even work one-on-one with a registered dietitian to maximize your results.

Genecept Assay

This genetic test analyzes a saliva sample to determine the type of psychiatric treatment that will most benefit you. The test highlights specific DNA markers that determine how you’ll respond to various psychiatric treatments. Your provider uses the results to prescribe medication, such as antidepressants for depression.

Genomind

Genomind testing provides insights across multiple conditions to establish which neuropsychiatry medications are likely the most effective based on your genetics. It also contributes to dosing recommendations and potential drug-drug interactions determined by specific gene variants.

GeneSight®

GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test that uses a cheek swab to analyze how your genes likely affect medication outcomes.

Phenomics Health™

Phenomics Health provides an array of genetic tests that use cheek swabs to determine which psychiatric, pain, or other medicines likely work the best based on your genetic makeup.

Tempus

Tempus genetic tests use cheek swabs to establish which medication is best suited for a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

What does genetic testing involve?

Genetic testing is a quick procedure that takes 15-30 minutes on average.

When you arrive at Paramount Health Directions, your provider collects a saliva sample from your inner cheek. Afterward, they send your sample to a nearby genetics lab where it’s analyzed and interpreted.

About a week later, when your genetic test results are ready, you return to the office for a second time. Your provider explains the results of your test, answers your questions, and develops a personalized treatment plan.

At first, it may take some trial and error to determine the best treatment approach. Be patient, follow your provider’s instructions, and attend each of your scheduled appointments.
