What are chemical peels?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure that uses a chemical solution to remove old, dry, and damaged skin. Following treatment, the old skin peels away, revealing healthier, smoother skin underneath. Chemical peels also brighten your complexion, giving you a noticeable glow.

What types of skin problems can chemical peels treat?

Paramount Health Directions uses a top-quality VI Peel to treat various skin problems, including:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Mild scars
  • Sun spots, liver spots, and freckles
  • Uneven skin coloring
  • Rough skin
  • Scaly patches
  • Acne

Chemical peels can even treat actinic keratosis –– precancerous patches of skin that often form on the nose and cheeks.

Are there different types of chemical peels?

Paramount Health Directions offers several types of chemical peels, including:

Light “lunchtime” chemical peel

Your provider might recommend a light chemical peel if you have minor skin imperfections, such as fine lines, acne scars, or skin discoloration. A light chemical peel uses less powerful chemicals, so recovery only takes a few hours or days.

Medium chemical peel

A medium chemical peel makes your skin look younger and fresher. It’s a great option if you have moderate wrinkles, acne scars, or age spots. Since medium peels use stronger chemicals, recovery typically takes a week or longer.

Deep chemical peel

A deep chemical peel penetrates the lower layers of your skin, making it an ideal treatment for deep wrinkles, blotchy skin, and significant sun damage. Recovery takes several weeks and requires you to follow very specific instructions.

What is recovery like after a chemical peel?

After a VI Peel, it takes several days or weeks to recover. Your skin experiences a sunburn-like reaction. It turns red, feels sensitive, and begins to peel. Follow your provider’s recovery instructions. Don’t wear makeup or other skin products until your provider says it’s okay to do so. Take any medication as prescribed and get plenty of rest.

Will I need more than one chemical peel?

It depends. If you get a light chemical peel, Paramount Health Directions usually recommends a series of at least three peels spaced several weeks apart. Since light peels only remove a small layer of skin, it often takes multiple treatments to achieve your desired results. Medium and deep chemical peels, on the other hand, typically don’t require more than one session. That said, they take longer to recover from, so you might need to request time off work.
